Alumni Interaction – PhD in USA: How Can We Achieve It as a First-Generation Student The Department of Chemistry at KAHM Unity Women’s College, Manjeri, in association with Alchem Unity, organized an inspiring alumni interaction on 27th August 2024, featuring Ms. Shaima TP, a notable BSc Chemistry alumna from the 2018-2021 batch, who has been selected for a fully funded PhD position at the University of California, Riverside. The event, titled “PhD in USA: How Can We Achieve It as a First-Generation Student,” aimed to provide guidance and motivation to first-generation students aspiring to pursue higher education abroad. Ms. Shaima shared her personal journey, detailing the PhD application process, financial planning through scholarships and assistantships, and the cultural adjustments required for studying in the USA. She also addressed the challenges she faced as a first-generation student, such as overcoming imposter syndrome and managing the demands of academic life. The session, coordinated by Dr. Jamsheena V and Ms. Ridha E, included a lively Q&A segment, allowing students to engage directly with Ms. Shaima and gain practical advice. The event was highly successful, leaving students more informed, motivated, and prepared to pursue their academic ambitions in the USA
