The Department of Chemistry organized a community outreach program at Nazrath School, Manjeri, on the 6th of March 2023, with the aim of promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices. One of the key activities included in this initiative was a paper pen making activity using waste paper, which was led by 4th semester BSc Chemistry students. The program commenced with an introductory session, facilitated by Ms. Omniya Ummer, the student coordinator. During this session, students were provided with an overview of waste paper recycling and its significance in reducing environmental impact. They were educated about the adverse effects of excessive paper waste and the importance of recycling as a means to conserve resources and mitigate pollution. Following the introductory session, 4th semester BSc Chemistry students demonstrated the process of making paper pens using waste paper. They provided step-by-step instructions, showcasing how waste paper could be transformed into useful and eco-friendly products. The demonstration highlighted the simplicity and effectiveness of recycling waste paper into practical items, such as pens, thereby encouraging students to explore sustainable alternatives in their daily lives. Throughout the demonstration, students actively engaged with the process, asking questions and expressing interest in learning more about the paper pen making process. The hands-on nature of the activity allowed students to participate directly, fostering a sense of empowerment and environmental stewardship. Moreover, the paper pen making activity served as a platform for promoting creativity and innovation. Students were encouraged to experiment with different designs and decorations for their paper pens, further enhancing their appreciation for upcycling and repurposing materials. Ms. Nourin, the student coordinator, played a crucial role in organizing and coordinating the activities, ensuring smooth execution of the program alongside Dr. Jamsheena, the faculty coordinator.
