The World Environment Day 2023 with the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution” encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment, and is a reminder of people’s actions on plastic pollution. By dedicating a specific day to the environment, we can collectively address environmental challenges and work towards a more sustainable and resilient planet.By conserving biodiversity, we can safeguard the planet’s natural heritage and secure a sustainable future for both human and non-human life. As part of World Environment Day Celebration 2023, PG Department of Botany has been introduced an Orchidarium at college campus on 09th June 2023. Orchids, with their captivating beauty and ecological significance, are an integral part of our natural world. The species thrive in specific habitats, many of which are under threat due to deforestation and urbanization. The Department initiative aims to protect and restore these habitats in our campus as hanging orchidarium. It is a specialized setup designed to grow orchids in a suspended or hanging manner that provides a unique way to display and cultivate these beautiful plants while optimizing their growth conditions. The programme helps to impart the concept of conservation of biodiversity and nature in young blooming minds together with the academic life. In the programme, Second Semester MSc Botany students prepared coconut husk pots and planted orchids using the potting mixture with the composition of charcoal and clay tile and coconut husk pieces. The hanging pots were fixed on the branches of Ficus auriculata Lour. (Atthi / Elephant Ear Fig tree) in front of College Canteen using coir ropes. Orchidarium acts as the conservatory of important species including Coelogyne, Oberonia, Bulbophyllum, Cleisostoma, Cymbidium etc..
