Postgraduate students from Department of Botany, KAHM Unity Women’s College, Manjeri, visited Indian Institute of Spices Research (ICAR – IISR), Kozhikode on 21/08/2023 FN. The aim of the visit was to enhance their understanding of plant pathology, molecular boliology, plant biotechnology, and spice cultivation, with a particular focus on black pepper varieties. The students were introduced to various diagnostic techniques employed in identifying and managing plant diseases. The students then proceeded to Molecular and Biotechnology Lab and they were exposed to cutting-edge research techniques such as DNA sequencing, genetic modification, PCR and Gel Doc techniques. The group visited the plant nursery and observed various stages of plant propagation and growth of pepper, nutneg, vanilla, etc. In the afternoon session they visited Kerala Vallikkunnu Community Reserve, Balathiruthi to observe ecologically sensitive mangroves and associated vegetation. Notable mangrove species like Avicennia officinalis, Avicennia marina and Bruguiera cylindrica were among those identified during their visit. These different species play crucial roles in the coastal ecosystem by providing habitats for various marine life, protecting shorelines from erosion, and contributing to overall environmental health. The field trip was coordinated by Dr. Faseela P, Ms. Shifa and Ms. Fayiza (3rdsem MSc Botany).
