Workshop on ‘Grow your own Microgreens

Microgreens are packed with nutrients including vitamin K & fibre, which help to manage high blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attack. Since microgreens are easy to grow at home with minimal supplies, they can be a great source of daily nutritional requirements. In connection with World Heart Day, PG Department of Botany organized a workshop entitled ‘Grow your own Microgreens’ on 26th September 2023. As part of the programme, the seeds of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) and green gram (Vigna radiata L.) were soaked in water for 6-8 hours to speed up the germination. The seed beds were prepared on wet cotton layers placed in plastic trays and incubated in a warm location. Misted the microgreens daily with water to keep the cotton moist. Once the microgreens developed a set of true leaves, they were harvested and rinsed gently under running water. The collected microgreens were handed over to Shylaja K., Anganavadi Worker, Anganavadi (14), Adangampuram, Narukara, Manjeri and the faculties of Department of English and Mathematics, KAHM Unity Women’s College, Manjeri. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Deepa P. (Assistant Professor Adhoc, PG Department of Botany), Hana Backer (Assistant Professor Adhoc, PG Department of Botany) and Fayiza T., 3rd Semester M.Sc. Botany.
