BRIDGE COURSE- DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY (2024-25)
The Department of Psychology organized a departmental-level bridge course for the first-year BSc Psychology students (FYUGP-2024) batch on 11th, 12th, and 17th July 2024. Faculty from various departments gave a brief introduction to the major, minor, and multidisciplinary courses being provided at KAHM Unity Women’s College, Manjeri. On 11th July 2024, during the first hour, Dr. Said Hamid Thangal (Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology) introduced their minor course, Basics in Cellular Physiology. He described the prerequisites, the course objectives, and the outcomes of the course to the students. The second session was handled by Farsana M. (Assistant Professor, Department of Statistics), who introduced the minor course, Descriptive Statistics. She explained how the course will provide the foundational tools to summarize and interpret data effectively, like measures of central tendencies (mean, median, and mode), variability (such as range and standard deviation), and patterns within data sets. The third session was effectively handled by Fathima Shirin K. A. (Head of the Department of Psychology). She elucidated on the different fields of psychology and the career opportunities that one can choose from. The session was helpful for the students to know more about the field and to clear any persisting doubts regarding the same. The last session was taken by Thasneem Rahmathulla (Assistant Professor Adhoc, Department of Psychology), who engaged the students by providing knowledge on the foundations of psychology. She introduced the field of experimental psychology and how it benefits in making inferences on the various phenomena related to psychology.
On the second day, 12th July 2024, the first session was handled by Hajara (Assistant Professor Adhoc, Department of Psychology), who presented the department profile, including the vision, mission, achievements of the students, alumni activities, experiential/participative learning programs conducted by the department, extension and outreach activities, the certificate courses provided, the various programs for slow and advanced learners, seminars and webinars, co-curricular/extra-curricular activities, and association activities conducted by the department. Noushad Ali P K (Assistant Professor, Department of Arabic) during the second hour conducted several activities to improve their life skills. As a trained professional, he made the students engage in practical exercises and collaborative tasks, which indeed helped the students overcome their initial novice status and build strong bonds with their classmates. In the third and fourth hours, Arifa Beegum, Assistant Professor (Ad hoc) in the Department of Malayalam, and Shahana, Assistant Professor (Ad hoc), in the Department of English provided students with detailed information about the various ability enhancement courses, including the course objectives and outcomes, respectively. The last session was efficiently taken over by Hamraz Ahamed M. (Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Education), who introduced the multidisciplinary course on Yoga and Stress Management, which offers practical tools to handle stress, enhance their overall well-being, and improve their academic performance.
On the third day, 17th July 2024, Fathima Shirin K A (Head of the Department of Psychology) led the first-year BSc Psychology students on a campus tour aimed to familiarize the new students with the college’s facilities, resources, and overall environment. During the walk, the students also visited various key areas such as the psychology lab, indoor stadium, lecture halls, and recreational spaces. They were also introduced to the administrative sections and other support services available on campus. During the second and third hours, the third-year BSc Psychology students conducted an ice-breaking session titled “Freeze and Fun 2.0.”. The session was coordinated by Fathima Shamila K V (Student, Third year BSc Psychology) and included a variety of engaging activities such as Theme Act, where students performed skits based on given themes; Human Knot, a team-building exercise where participants untie themselves from a human knot; In and Out, a game that involved quick thinking and movement; Design Drawing, which encouraged creativity through drawing tasks; and various other cultural activities that helped the new students bond, build teamwork skills, and feel more comfortable in their new environment. The session was overall coordinated by Hajara (DQAC and Assistant Professor Ad hoc, Department of Psychology).
