Department of Mathematics and the Mathematics and Statistics Club, in collaboration with the NGO Good Earth Organization, organized a two-day nature camp at the beautiful location of Mananthavadi, Wayanad on the 22nd and 23rd of October 2023. The camp aimed to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for nature, wildlife, and environmental conservation among its participants.
Mr. Tharanath, Beat Forest Officer, South Wayanad, inaugurated the camp. Mr. Hamid Ali, Renowned Environmentalist and Mr. Shaji, Deputy Range Officer and South Wayanad Range, led the sessions of the camp.
Activities of the camp were:
Kuruva Dweep Trekking: The camp began with an invigorating trek to Kuruva Dweep, where participants immersed themselves in the lush greenery and pristine environment of the island.
Sky Watch: Participants had the opportunity to stargaze and learn about the celestial wonders in the night sky, gaining a new appreciation for astronomy and our place in the universe.
Bird Watch: An early morning bird-watching session allowed participants to spot and learn about the diverse bird species residing in the area.
Visit to Tribe Settlements: In an effort to understand and appreciate the cultural and traditional aspects of the region, the group visited local tribal settlements, interacting with the indigenous communities.
Cleaning of Invasive Plants: Participants engaged in eco-friendly activities, including the removal of invasive plant species to help maintain the ecological balance.
Field Visit to Study Trees: The camp included educational field visits to study and understand the trees in the forest, emphasizing their ecological importance.
Plastic Cleanup: A collective effort was made to clean the camp premises and nearby areas of plastics and other non-biodegradable waste, promoting environmental responsibility.
37 students from the first and second years of BSc Mathematics participated in the camp. Mr. Abdul Rof V, Head of the Department of Mathematics; Ms. Ashitha PA, Coordinator, Mathematics and Statistics Club; and Ms. Farsana M, Joint Coordinator, Mathematics and Statistics Club, accompanied the students.
