Butterfly gardens have recently become very popular in Kerala and many other states of India. The process of establishing a butterfly garden started in Kerala through the efforts of Dr. George Matthew, a former KFRI scientist who started a garden focused on attracting butterflies. He is an open garden that cares for larval and adult host plants. The garden facilitates daily data collection on butterfly visits and the various life stages of several species of butterflies. Butterfly research is now beginning with thermal ecology studies that identify correlations between ambient temperature and butterfly activity. In the park, professional and amateur enthusiasts observe butterfly habits and photograph insects.
