The Department was started in 1992 with UG programme. The following years marked the progress of the department which included updating of the faculty. The compulsory auxiliary for B.Sc. course is Chemistry and Zoology. Add on Courses, Certificate Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics are also being provided. The Department owns the prestige of securing university ranks consistently from the time of its begnning.
Home Science is an applied subject and it is an interdisciplinary field of studies comprising of Food and Nutrition, Clothing and Textile, Resource Management, Human Development and Extension Education and Communication. It is a multidisciplinary education for better living. Home science is an applied science build upon both the discipline of science and humanities for the purpose of achieving the welfare and wellbeing of the family and society. Under UGC Family and Community Science is a professional course. It deals with the core needs of a human being, the food, shelter and clothing. Today the Home Science curriculum has been restructured and scientifically planned to make it multi-dimensional and skill oriented. Backed by a competent faculty team, the department excels in every aspect of higher education. The curriculum is designed such that it provides formalized education in field of Home Science by grooming young women to face challenges and opportunities awaiting them in future.
The Dept of Home Science offers under graduate course in Family and Community Science and a self-financing post graduate course in Home Science (Nutrition and Dietetics). Post graduate course commenced in the year 2013. The department is equipped with well-developed nutrition lab, textile lab and biochemistry lab. The department with well-placed alumni is actively involved in teaching and extension activities. Extension activity and outreach programmes are organized regularly by the department like nutrition camps, workshops and awareness programmes. The department is in collaboration with various national and state agencies, also conducts and observes National Nutrition week, Breastfeeding promotion week, World Diabetes Day, World Food Day etc. Entrepreneurship Skill Development Programmes were conducted for aspiring women of the community on various themes. The department organizes and conducts exhibitions, seminars, conferences, lectures, and workshops to create awareness and update students and community on recent emerging health and social issues and it’s combating. Best practices like Pothichoru, Earn While Learn are the highlights of the department.

Home Science has 3 labs, Nutrition Lab, Textiles Lab and Biochemistry Lab.
NUTRITION LAB
The department has a well equipped nutrition lab to provide practical knowledge of how to plan diet keeping in mind the patient needs and requirements. The students are taught to plan the menu scientifically, based on the calorific value of the food materials. Food Science experiments create an understanding of the influence of food ingredients, the amounts in which they need to be used for a required product and how methods of preparation and processing can be altered for desired results. Common home measures in use in India and their weight and volume equivalents in metric units and identification of common adulterants, effect of browning, heat and pH on vegetables and fruits has been added to enable the students to make use of this book more effectively. This booklet contains the Method of recipes which may be useful for Home Science students in providing nutritious menus.
Objectives:
Rules in Cooking Laboratory
TEXTILES LAB
The Textile Testing Lab equipped with the latest equipment to provide practical knowledge to students. Clothing construction is an integral part of home science. It is concerned with imparting the skills in drafting adaption and construction of different garments. These skills are taught in a laboratory equipped with sewing
Machines and other tools which can be a source of danger when not properly handled. Following are the safety practices to be adopted by the users of the laboratory:
BIOCHEMISTRY LAB
The Biochemistry Lab equipped with the latest equipment to provide practical knowledge to students.
Good Laboratory Practices:
GOOD LABORATORY PRACTICES :- GLP
1) Cleanliness is essential for biochemical experiment. Work area must be clean. Make sure that all equipments and labware it must be clean before use. Clean the working area equipment and lab ware after use.
2) Laboratory work area must be free from unwanted reagent.
3) Proper storage of chemicals must be done.
4) All the reagents must be neatly labeled. Do not contaminate reagents by using used / dirty pipettes for taking the reagent.
5) Do not contaminate chemicals by using used / dirty spatulas (incase of solids) for taking out the chemical.
6) Do not contaminate stoppers of reagent bottles and put the stoppers of bottle immediately after using reagents.
7) Returns the reagent bottles to there respective shelf immediately after use so as to avoid accidental breaking of bottles on the
working bench.
8) Throw solids in the waste bins if it is necessary to pour strong acid or alkali into the sink, run water freely to wash it away.
9) All equipments should be handled with extreme care and learn the correct operating procedure for each instrument before using it keep the instrument in working order after its use.
10) Fire extinguishers and first aid box must be available in the laboratory.
11 All glassware must be sterilized to prevent infections
